We've come a
long way since twigs were first used as
toothbrushes. But why do we brush our teeth?
To remove plaque, the sticky deposit of
bacteria, that shows up on our tooth surface.
Plaque can cause gingival inflammation (gum
disease) and dental decay. Tooth brushing
alone will not remove all the plaque; regular
visits to the dentist are essential.
How often
should we brush our teeth? Dentists recommend
twice daily thorough brushing with fluoride
toothpaste. Using the shape of a pea is the
entire amount that is needed. Women brush more
frequently than men - 76% of women brush their
teeth at least twice a day compared with 58%
of men. No wonder our smiles are brighter in
the winner's circle!
How should we
brush? By using the gentle scrub method. Place
the brush at the neck of the tooth where it
meets the gum and use very short horizontal
movements, at a 45degree angle. The brush can
be held in a pen-like grip to avoid excessive
force, which can damage the gums and tooth
surface.
